The Rational Child

Today on the way home from church, Pot Pie asked this question:

"Why are the birds (pronounced "buhds") sitting on the wires?"

Then I, being the silly mother I am, the kind of mother who relishes in preserving my children's juvenile, cartoony visions of the world for as long as I can, replied with:

"They are sitting up there, looking down on us humans thinking to themselves 'Boy, do we have it easy. We just get to sit up here on the wires, watching over everything, eating seeds whenever we want, and taking a dip in a bird bath whenever we feel like it. We don't have any worries or troubles.'"

Pot Pie seemed to accept this answer, but Cutie Pie contemplated it for a moment and then said matter-of-factly:

"Unless they get shot. Then they have worries. And, boy, do they have troubles!"

So much for preserving their childhood innocence...
